Senior police figures have expressed their concern after two officers came under attack with one being stabbed in Birmingham. They were attending an incident in Yardley Wood Road yesterday (Sunday November 19), when they were assaulted.

A student officer was said to have been attacked with a knife, sustaining multiple wounds. Both victims were taken to hospital where their injuries were not said to be serious West Midlands Police said.

Both have since been discharged. A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of wounding remains in custody as enquiries continue into the incident in the Springfield area.

Policing bodies were left disgusted and concerned at the incident, while offering their support to their injured colleagues.

Birmingham Police said: "We've a man in custody tonight (Sunday 19 November) after two officers were injured as they attended a property in Yardley Wood Road, Springfield, at about 3.30pm today. The officers were taken to hospital and thankfully following treatment have since been discharged.

"We are offering them support as they continue with their recovery after this upsetting and unacceptable incident. Our officers do not deserve to be assaulted as they work to keep our communities safe.

"A man in his 50s arrested on suspicion of wounding remains in police custody as enquiries continue."

Richard Cooke, chair of West Midlands Police Federation which represents rank and file officers, tweeted: "One of our student officers was viciously attacked today with a knife receiving significant lasting injuries.

"They will live but what has happened to them is absolutely abhorrent & shocking . Our thoughts & those of all colleagues in @WMPolice @westmidspolfed are with them."

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster said: “It is completely unacceptable for any police officer to be assaulted, whilst they work bravely and tirelessly to keep people across the West Midlands safe.

“This is a deeply concerning incident. My thoughts are with the 2 police officers who were injured.

"I know West Midlands Police will support the officers, whilst they recover from their injuries.”
