A man was arrested and a suspected XL Bully dog seized after a pet was fatally mauled and its owner as stunned onlookers watched on. Cocker spaniel Luna was killed when she was savaged in Tamworth's popular Castle Grounds in the town centre.

Luna's owner Claire Goodwin was also injured in the attack, which happened as she walked her dog with her children on Sunday, November 5. Now Staffordshire Police has confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.

The 22-year-old was bailed. The The dog was seized and put in secure accommodation.

The force said: "Following the attack, officers spoke to a number of people who saw what happened and have been carrying out enquiries to find out more. We also issued an appeal.

"We would like to thank those who have already come forward with information about what happened. We understand the concern this incident has caused in the local community and we’d like to reiterate that our investigation is still ongoing."

Claire previously told BirminghamLive: "We were talking about how much we loved Luna and how precious she was. I glanced to my left and I saw a dog - I've never seen a look in a dog's eyes like it.

"The three of us were traumatised. We went to the car to get Luna some help.

"Members of the public helped us as I was bleeding from my chin and Luna was bleeding a lot - we were hysterical."

She went on to describe Luna as the "beautiful heart and soul" of their family. She said: "We are beyond devastated. My partner got Luna as a gift and she's the best gift I'll ever have."
