Two people were injured after a fire broke out at a house in the early hours of this morning. Emergency services rushed to the A34 Walsall Road in Perry Barr.

A total of 22 firefighters were sent to the scene of the blaze, which began in a first-floor bedroom of a two-storey detached house just before 2am today, Thursday, October 26. Six firefighters wearing breathing equipment used three hose reels to extinguish the flames.

A man was assessed at the scene for potentially serious injuries, but he refused further help. A woman had injuries which were not believed to be serious. She received self care advice before being discharged at the scene.

Scenes of crimes officers and fire investigators were at the property, thought to be an HMO, this morning. The cause of the fire was under investigation, with West Midlands Police leading the probe.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: "We were called at 1.58am to a fire at a private property on Walsall Road. One ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. Upon arrival we found a man and a woman. The man was assessed and had potentially serious injuries.

"He declined further treatment from ambulance staff and received self care advice before being discharged at the scene. The woman had injuries not believed to be serious. She received self care advice before being discharged at the scene.”

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "Shortly after 1.55am on Thursday (26 October), we responded to Walsall Road in the Perry Barr area of Birmingham. Four fire engines and two 4x4 brigade response vehicles attended the scene, crewed by 22 firefighters from Aston, Perry Barr, Handsworth and Ladywood stations. The first arrived within four minutes of being mobilised.

"This was a fire in the first-floor bedroom of a two-storey detached house. Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used three hose reels to extinguish the fire.

"One woman was given a precautionary check for smoke inhalation at the scene. There were no other injuries. Crews damped down and we left the scene at 8.42am." A resident living nearby said she spotted lights at around 3am and saw two fire engines and two or three police vehicles.

There was also a Cadent gas van. One lane of the road was cordoned off with traffic even at that time crawling in the outside lane past the scene. Vehicles with blue lights flashing continued in the road until around 7.45am.

The scene was on the busy A34 Walsall Road heading out of the city. But the road remained fully open and traffic was not affected.
