A man was arrested on suspicion of setting light to a house he allegedly broke into and then ‘barricaded himself inside’. The incident took place in John Street in Stafford on Sunday, October 22.

Staffordshire Police were called to a home after a man was said to have ‘forced his way inside’. He refused to leave and was spoken to by negotiators after he barricaded himself inside.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was also called to the incident at 8.54pm on Sunday after ‘reports of concerns for a patient’s welfare’ at a private address in John Street. A paramedic office and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) paramedic attended the incident but were stood down due to its ‘protracted’ nature.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was then called after ‘smoke was seen coming from the building’. The ambulance service also returned to the address at 9am on Monday, October 23 after being called by the fire service.

They sent an ambulance, two paramedic officers and the Trust’s HART team. A spokesman said: “Once the patient was brought to safety, he was assessed by ambulance staff for minor injuries before being taken to County Hospital in Stafford.”

A 41-year-old man from Tamworth was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life on Monday. Officers then conducted enquiries in the area and reassured the public.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: “We have arrested a man following an incident in Stafford on Monday, October 23. We were called to a home on Sunday, October 22 after a man forced his way inside.

“He refused to leave and was spoken by specially-trained negotiators after he barricaded himself inside. Our colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service were then called after smoke was seen coming from the building. Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service also went to the scene.

“Shortly after 9.30am, we arrested a 41-year-old man, from Tamworth, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

“Officers stayed at the scene this afternoon to speak to witnesses, review footage of the area and carry out enquiries to find out more about what happened and reassure the local community. No one was injured and the occupiers of the home continue to be supported by officers.

“We would like to thank those who were in the area at the time for their patience and understanding following a period of disruption.
