A popular Broad Street bar and live music venue has announced it will close this weekend. The Velvet Music Rooms in Birmingham city centre will close after a final night on Sunday, October 29, after 19 years.

Last orders will take place on Sunday evening and the owners are urging customers to come along to say a 'fond farewell'. A statement on the bar's Facebook page said 'while we're sad to leave, we are immensely proud of our achievements'.

Bosses thanked their customers "from the bottom of our hearts". The announcement prompted dozens of comments on the Facebook post from devastated customers.

The post on the Velvet Music Rooms' Facebook page read: "After a phenomenal 19 years of trading, it’s time to call LAST ORDERS at Velvet Music Rooms, it’s closing time folks. Sunday, October 29, will be our final day of trading. Please come and join us over the weekend, for a fond farewell a pint or two and one last knees-up!!!

"Everyone is welcome. We would especially love to celebrate with the wonderful people who have been an integral part of our journey over the past two decades.

"Thank you to our loyal staff, past and present. You have been the heart and soul of our journey. Your laughter and enthusiasm have lit up our nights. To our wonderful customers who've had special moments with us, we raise a toast to you all! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your custom and friendship over the past 19 years. It’s been great craic. Thankyou to the various communities that have embraced us over the years."

They added: "But, we are an Irish family business, and, in our time here, our family has grown and evolved. New commitments, ambitions and opportunities have come our way.

"While we’re sad to leave, we are immensely proud of our achievements, and our contribution to The Westside nighttime economy. We will always cherish winning Best Independent Bar, Best Front Of House and Best Management Team many times at BoBs Awards, along with being the very best venue for Live Music and Sports on Broad Street.

"Along with us being the flagship venue for The Birmingham Jazz Festival, Henry’s Blues and our support to Birmingham’s up-and-coming artists, we feel we have made a unique contribution to our vibrant, diverse city.

"So, it’s time for new adventures for us. We raise a glass to you, our customers, Thank you for standing by us."

In response, Pat said: "Sad day. Will be missed but good luck for the future." Kirsty said: "Very sad to see it go it sure is a end of a era but I wish you all the best. This place will always hold a special place in my heart as it’s where I met Clive."

Nigel posted: "What a shame!!!" While Matt penned: "Thank you for being absolutely amazing we have enjoyed playing there we wish you all the best in your future endeavours."
