When we visited Cadbury World last week, we were shocked to see that there was one item missing from the shelves of the popular gift shop. Among giant bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk, chocolate teapots, footballs and shoes, there was a distinct lack of a long-time Cadbury World icon.

In the entire store, we couldn't find a single Chuckle Bean, the little cocoa characters that feature on the Cadabra ride, at the 4D Cinema and throughout the attraction. Found exclusively at Cadbury World, the funny little beans have Brummie accents and, like Willy Wonka's Oompa Loompas, operate the production line if lore is to be believed.

But despite chocolate makers on site crafting chocolate pumpkins for Halloween and the attraction even having a full-sized Bullring Bull and replica of King Charles' crown, there was not a single Chuckle Bean available for purchase when we visited.

In the past, the shop has stocked small and large versions of the Chuckle Beans, cast in chocolate to eat. There have also been Chuckle Bean mugs and plushie toys for children to take home but the lack of items available for purchase had us worried that they were being phased out.

Fortunately the attraction, which was taken over by Merlin in January this year, says that the lack of beans is down to the characters' popularity over the summer. A spokesperson said: "Our Chuckle Bean items have been incredibly popular over the summer holidays and will be back in stock as soon as possible."

The Cadbury World Shop is currently undergoing refurbishment. Despite works, items are still available to buy, including giant bars for just £5.

Cadbury World is taking part in Birmingham Heritage Week, offering visitors who buy a ticket between September 8 and 15 a complimentary guided tour of Bournville. For more information, click here.
