Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has responded to the reception that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez got when being awarded the Yashin Trophy.

Martinez was given the award on Monday night, with him being named the best goalkeeper in world football at the Ballon d’Or ceremony which was held in Paris. The reception for Martinez was mixed as he took to the stage.

Presenter Didier Drogba was forced to ask the crowd to be quiet amid boos from some sections. The reception is likely to have been due to Martinez’s antics following the World Cup final win against France, where he appeared to mock Kylian Mbappe.

However, Man United defender Martinez believes that the Villa man should have been shown more respect when he picked up his award. He has praised his international teammate for his influence on the team.

"Without a doubt, it should have been respected: regardless of the player," The Man United man told the Argentine media, via TyC Sports .

He added: "I am one of those that I respect and the truth is that I loved the attitude of Dibu, always setting the example. It makes me happy because of Dibu's example more than that of other people.”

It was another Argentina international who won the main prize of the night at the ceremony. Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi won the award for the eighth time. Lisandro Martinez said that all of his international teammates deserve the recognition that they are getting.

"Having him as a teammate is incredible. Above all, the kind of person Leo is, the truth is that he deserves to win everything,” he said of Messi. “He has already won absolutely everything so he deserves everything.

“The same for Dibu, for Julián (Alvarez) and for Lautaro (Martinez) who were there too; it is the result of the work they have been doing. The truth is that they deserve it again and I am very happy for them.”
