A dad who killed his three-week-old baby said 'it's because I'm gay, Muslim and married', in custody footage shown to a jury. After Kadees Mohammed was arrested he told police 'I killed my son today'.

Birmingham Crown Court was also played CCTV from a neighbouring home at Dovey Road, Sparkhill which captured a man screaming 'Allahu Akbar' - God is great in Arabic - at the time it is believed the defendant inflicted fatal injuries to baby Mohammed Ibrahim in the early hours of October 18 last year.

The 30-year-old denies murder and manslaughter as well as inflicting grievous bodily harm to his wife and mother on the same night. There is no dispute Mohammed attacked all three and caused the death of his son but he relies on the legal defence of 'insanity', the court has heard.

On Friday afternoon the jury was shown a CCTV compilation of the series of events leading up to Ibrahim's death, including Mohammed walking to the nearby mosque on three separate occasions on October 17. The footage also captured the arrival of the defendant's sister and brother-in-law as well as paramedics in the evening due to his behaviour prompting concerns, it has been alleged.

Mohammed's sibling took him to A&E at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital around 11pm. Whilst there he sent a WhatsApp message saying 'I just felt really overwhelmed by a lot of intrusive thoughts'. He had also sent another text in which he stated he had had a breakdown and felt suicidal earlier in the day.

The court was told Mohammed stayed at A&E for around 40 minutes before deciding to leave without being seen. The jury was shown residential CCTV from Dovey Road which captured the screams of a male some time after 3am, when it is thought the defendant killed Ibrahim.

Prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu Kc said: "You may have heard with relative clarity words likely to have been said by the defendant, in particular Allahu Akbar."

The footage later showed Mohammed's wife Mehwish Mubashir running out of the home and banging on a neighbour's door. Police were called at 3.42am and arrived at 3.51am by which time baby Ibrahim had been taken next door, the court was told.

Police body worn camera footage of Mohammed's arrest captured him topless sitting on a sofa. He said 'I love Allah' and repeated 'Allah, Allah,' as he was detained on the floor.

At one point the defendant remarked 'I love my mother more than I love Allah' before the footage showed him being walked down Dovey Road in handcuffs by officers. Upon his arrival at Perry Barr Custody Suite Mohammed again repeated 'Allah'. As he was being booked in he said: "I can't believe I killed my son."

In an exchange with the officer at the desk Mohammed remarked: "I'm scared you guys are going to kill me. I'm scared you are going to hurt me.

"You're not going to hurt me? Because I'm English? I love this country so much."

At a later point Mohammed was heard to say 'you know what it is? It's because I'm gay, Muslim and married'. He added: "I killed my son today."
