Aston Villa were among 12 Premier League clubs to vote in favour of a change to Premier League transfer rules, with Wolves voting the other way, according to reports.

It was proposed to clubs on Tuesday that a ban should be put in place to stop clubs from signing players on loan from related clubs during the January transfer window. It would have, therefore, blocked the likes of Newcastle from signing players on loan from the Saudi Pro League when the window opens.

The vote was held at a Premier League meeting, but the proposal narrowly missed out on a 14 club threshold it needs in order to come into effect. According to the Times, Villa were one of the 12 clubs to vote in favour of the rule.

The report says that Newcastle United, Sheffield United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Everton, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Burnley were the eight sides to vote against the proposal. Most of the clubs are linked with multi-club ownership models, meaning that they will be able to sign players on loan from related clubs in January.

There was also another vote on tougher rules on commercial deals between clubs related to the same ownership, but, again, that proposal was thrown out after 13 of the 14 clubs needed, voted in favour. It was only Burnley from the clubs who voted against the transfer changes, who voted in favour, with Villa again voting yes.

Villa are part of a multi-club ownership, with owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens holding a stake in Portuguese club Vitoria Sport Clube. That stake was however reduced after both clubs qualified for European football this season.
