Hidden gems of Birmingham you can find if you look hard enough
We pass them all the time and the 'hidden gems' of Brum
You could be walking down a Birmingham street and pass a glacial bolder formed 450 million years ago or an ice sheet from the stone age. Sure, you wouldn't know - because you aren't an anorak - but the BirminghamLive in-house anorak is here to let you know.
We previously listed some Brummie hidden gems you could pass by any day, and we are back with more. There is a whole host of hidden history to discover in our city and we like to hunt them out.
Right on our door step there are fantastic treasures of history and we can miss them in a blink of an eye as we go past, and yet they have a rich history to tell. These include glacial bounders swept down from Snowdon during the ice age and landing in Northfield. Or strange tales of Queen Boudicca in Kings Norton possibly ending up under the McDonald's in Kings Norton.

Here's another batch of the places that fascinate me around our brilliant city.
The Great Stone in Northfield is a glacial bolder formed during an explosive volcanic eruption around 450-460 million years ago.

During the ice age, about 400,000 years ago, it was carried by an ice sheet from around Snowdon in North Wales and deposited in Northfield along with many others.

The boulder in Northfield stood on the corner of the 18th century pub, The Great Stone. for many years and was moved by Birmingham city council in 1954.

Today the stone is in the former 17th century village pound which was used to keep stray animals like cattle, sheep and pigs from wandering around. This is something we don't find much use for in the Northfield of today.

Northfield around 200 years ago was a small village on the edge of town, and even today, the area around old Northfield has a quaint feel about it near the pub and Church of St Laurence.
