It has been announced that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has come in 15th place in the Ballon d’Or rankings as the ceremony takes place in Paris.

It has been a memorable year for the Villa goalkeeper, with him being the hero in the World Cup final with Argentina back in December. Argentina came out as 4-2 winners in a penalty shootout after a dramatic 3-3 draw with France, with Martinez praised for his performances throughout the tournament.

But it’s not just on the international stage where the goalkeeper has impressed. The 31-year-old also helped Villa to qualify for the Europa Conference League at the end of last season with a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

That form has continued into the new season, with Villa currently sitting in fifth place in the table after the first 10 games of the season. It was confirmed back in September that Martinez’s performances had led to him being nominated for the Ballon d’Or .

Ahead of the ceremony which takes place in Paris on Monday night, the Villa man’s position in the rankings has now been confirmed with him being named as the 15th-best player in the world. Martinez is ranked as the second-best goalkeeper, behind Al Hilal’s Yassine Bounou, who has finished in 13th place.

Following the news, Villa fans took to social media to give their reaction. Here’s what just some had to say, with some believing that he should have finished higher.
