A woman has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a crash on a country lane between Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth has left a man fighting for his life. The incident involved a black Mercedes which came off the road, through a fence and into a field in Coppice Lane, Middleton near to the Coppice garden centre and Fig and Olive restaurant shortly before 10.30pm on Wednesday (November 15).

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT (Medical Emergency Response Incident Team) trauma doctor and critical care paramedic to the incident after receiving the call at 10.26pm. A man in his 30s had suffered life-threatening head injuries and had to be rushed to a major trauma centre, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

The 26-year-old driver from Nuneaton was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. She also suffered injuries – but these were not to believed to be serious and she was taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “Upon arrival we found a woman and a man who were the driver of and a passenger in the car. The man who was the passenger in the car was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained life-threatening injuries.

“He received advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene and was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment. The woman who was the driver of the car was assessed by ambulance staff at the scene and had sustained injuries not believed to be serious.

“She was conveyed to Good Hope Hospital for further assessment.”

Now Warwickshire Police is appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward. A spokesman for the force said: “A woman has been arrested after a single vehicle collision near Middleton on Wednesday night (November 15).

“At around 10.30pm the car left Coppice Lane near Middleton and ended up in a field. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

“A 26-year-old woman from Nuneaton was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. Anyone with information or dashcam footage, or any other witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Warwickshire Police at: www.warwickshire.police.uk/report or call 101.
