Calls have been renewed for every officer to be trained in Taser use after a student policeman was 'slashed' and a second punched. The officers were attacked at a property on Yardley Wood Road, Springfield, at around 3.30pm on Sunday, November 19.

Both victims were taken to hospital and later discharged. A man was later charged.

West Midlands Police Federation chair Rich Cooke said: “We’re offering all the support we can to the officers. For me, it reinforces that all officers should have Taser training if they want it. Assaults on officers are unacceptably high.

“We have a lot of relatively new-in-service officers, and they deserve the protection against this level of violence. It’s a horrible, traumatic experience. The fact you’re close to being seriously injured or worse, it can happen in a split second.

“It’s really scary, maybe not for you personally but for your family, friends and loved ones. That’s when it hits you, when you realise what you could lose."

Tariq Zeb, from Yardley Wood Road, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and causing actual bodily harm. The 52-year-old was remanded in custody and was due to appear before Birmingham magistrates today, Tuesday, November 21.
