The Big Brother contestants from the very first series

We take a look back at the contestants from the first series of Big Brother in 2000

Channel Four game show's Big Brother winner Craig Phillips, with the show's host Davina McCall, leaves the Big Brother House in east London, Friday September 15 2000.

With Big Brother back on our screens very soon, we take a look back to the very first series when eleven contestants, known as 'housemates' moved into the house. The news series first launched in 2000 and immediately caused controversy. It showed the physical and mental strain for contestants with housemate Nick Bateman causing many incidents. This gained him the name of 'Nasty Nick'.

Nick was reported to have smuggled a mobile phone into the house, but after a search, no phone was found. On day 24 a mobile helicopter was flown over the the garden and dropped leaflets into the house asking that Nick be nominated for eviction, the leaflets were removed before the housemates discovered them.

On day 35 it was revealed that Nick had tried to manipulate the nomination process and was removed from the house with Craig Phillips going on to win the show.
