All drivers have been warned they could face a £150 fine if caught doing one of the most annoying things while out on the road. A survey of more than 1,000 motorists found fellow drivers dropping litter from a vehicle was among actions that wound them up the most.

Now anyone who throws litter out the window while driving has been warned they could face a large bill if they are caught. It's something you might have witnessed when driving and many motorists agree there is no reason for it.

It was listed as the fourth most annoying driving habit, after failing to indicate, tailgating and cutting off other drivers. Almost half of motorists surveyed (47%) said littering from cars annoyed them.

The maximum fine for littering vehicles was doubled to £150 in 2017 in a bid to act as an increased deterrent. The Government said at the time the move would aim to "deal with litter louts and those few who mindlessly throw rubbish from their vehicles".

Then-environment minister Therese Coffey said: "Littering blights our communities, spoils our countryside and taxpayers’ money is wasted cleaning it up. Throwing rubbish from a vehicle is just as unacceptable as dropping it in the street and we will tackle this antisocial behaviour by hitting litter louts in the pocket."

Issuing fines is the responsibility of local authorities, however, who can't have eyes everywhere all the time, meaning it's something that will often go unpunished. CarMats.co.uk, which carried out the survey, said: "The survey of over 1,000 UK drivers revealed nearly half of Brits think littering and tailgating are among the most infuriating habits of fellow road users.

"Motorists also label littering as the biggest driving ick. Throwing litter out of car windows placed fourth on the list of annoyances with 47% of Brits admitting it grinds their gears.

"Brits said they would be put off by a potential partner who littered from their vehicle too, as motorists labelled it the nation’s biggest driving ick. Those guilty of littering from their car not only face dating repercussions but financial consequences too as those caught discarding waste from their vehicle could land a fine of up to £150."
